'Kicking foreigners out of schools is unconstitutional' says lawyer

Johannesburg - On 13 January, irate parents in Diepsloot West accused Muzomuhle Primary School and the education department of discriminating against their children because of their foreign national status.

A month later, a district school official spoke to GroundUp on condition of anonymity. The official, who fears reprisals for talking to the media, said between 30 and 40 children were turned away because they were not South African.

Update: Tree instantaneously combusts after lightning strike

Johannesburg - The charred remains of a 10 meter tall Palm tree -- the result of a direct lightning strike that caused it to go up in flames on Sunday -- is what greeted passersby this morning.

An electric storm followed  a blistering hot day in Johannesburg yesterday, with temperatures hovering around the mid 30's.

The tree was inside a residential-style property on the corner of School Road and Pritchard Street in North Riding. It's understood the property is used as a real estate business premises.

New footage of world's largest shark. It's mouth alone could eat half an adult body in one bite

New, unseen footage of what is largely touted as the biggest great white shark ever caught on camera has been released. Orginally filmed off the coast of Guadalupe Island in Mexico in November 2013, this new footage (watch below), was not released until now. 

The seven metre-long female, who was christened "Deep Blue", and is seen against the background of several cage divers. Her enormous size is a sight to behold. She was filmed .

Diving enthusiast Michael Maier, 48, released this video of Deep Blue, whom he says is also pregnant.
