Johannesburg - Deputy Minister of Finance, Mcebisi Jonas has consulted his "conscience, my political values and the best traditions of my organisation, the ANC" and outed the Gupta family for meddling in government. 

He said: "Members of the Gupta family offered me the position of Minister of Finance to replace then- Minister Nene. I rejected this out of hand. The basis of my rejection of their offer is that it makes a mockery of our hard earned democracy..."

Treasury hits back: Duarte will prove she did not offer Fin Minister job to Jonas

Johannesburg - National Treasury has broken its silence over claims that Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas was offered the position of Finance Minister in December.

In a statement on Monday, Treasury accused the Sunday Times of giving credence to rumours, saying it used too many anonymous sources for its articles.

The newspaper quoted sources within the Treasury on claims ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte offered Mr. Jonas the position, a week after the Gupta family allegedly tried to persuade him to take the offer.

Pension fund reform is critical, says minister

Johannesburg - Deputy Minister of Finance Mcebisi Jonas has warned that pension fund reform must be addressed more seriously in the country.
He was speaking at the fifth Annual Audit Committee Conference in Sandton yesterday.
Mr Jonas said that the issue of reform was topical in light of the financial crisis faced in several countries around the world.
He said pension funds played an important role in the national economy, adding that it guarded against poverty in old age.
