Johannesburg - Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA) founder Wayne Duvenage has warned that a threatening SMS send from SANRAL has no substance to it. 

The SMS reads: "Your outstanding toll bal is R50,000. Pay R20,000 and get a discount of R30,000. Failure to settle the outstanding e-toll will result in a loss of this discount, vehicle listing and collection action being commenced against you for the full amount due."

SA learners knock out USA to take victory at Moot Court debate

Johannesburg - Praise has flooded in for the learners who secured South Africa a victory at the 2016 International Schools Moot Court competition at The Hague.

Team South Africa consisted of pupils from rural and former model C schools who took on the United States in the finals. 

Learners Nthabiseng Mbatha, Simon Motsheweni, Paseka Selinyane, Claire Rankin, Clara-Marie Macheke, Katelyn Chettle and Shandre Smith represented the country in October last year. The competition was held at the Constitutional Court and was presided over by Constitutional judges.

Swarm of bees fly into vehicle, attack passengers

Johannesburg - A swarm of bees in Benoni attacked the passengers of a taxi this afternoon, leaving a child and one adult in a critical condition.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the incident happened at 16h25 at the intersection of Jones and Pitfontein Roads. It's believed eight children were in the taxi when a moving swarm of bees entered through the windows and began to sting them. 

"Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the children and found that a child and the adult was critically injured while the other children [were] in a serious condition."

Lewis threatens man who stood up for gardener with "consequences"

Johannesburg - Lewis Stores has penned a strongly worded letter to the man who stood up for a gardener who was being charged R17,995 for a R5,999 14KG twin tub washing machine on Higher Purchase.

This morning, Onne Vegter took to Facebook to post the response he received from the retailer. In the letter, Lewis claims their brand was defamed by Mr. Vegter when he used social media to highlight his issue.

The company said they were fully compliant with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and that Mr. Vegter had his facts wrong.

Mother of infant found burned and dead in bath tub

Johannesburg - An investigation is being conducted at Helen Joseph Hospital after a patient was found unresponsive and severely burned in a bath tub filled with hot water.

The Gauteng Department of Health said in a statement.yesterday that nurses had seen the 35-year-old victim just 15 minutes before she mysteriously died. Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said another patient had made the gruesome discovery and alerted staff to the situation.

Wanted man behind bars after Hawks discover major mandrax stash

Johannesburg - The Hawks have arrested two men -- one of them a wanted person -- after they were bust transporting thousands of mandrax tablets in George in the Western Cape.

According to a statement, Bethuel Malebo, whose real surname is Mzinyane (50), and his passenger Kenny Kenneth Sithole (63) were caught during a routine stop and search. It's believed the Hawks' Organised Crime Unit and the Tsitsikama K9 Unit were out on patrol when the stopped the men and searched the vehicle they were in.

Video of SA girl catching a charging cobra is FAKE

Johannesburg - A viral video showing a South African woman catching a charging cobra by its neck, is fake.

The lady is seen sunbathing near a lake when a man is overheard warning the woman that the snake is approaching her.

She instantly and calmly reacts by grabbing the cobra around its neck and flinging it away from her.

Commentators however were quick to quash notions that the incident was real. Several pointed to the visible shadow of a person reeling in a plastic snake with a fishing line.
