Calls for legalisation intensify after murder of 3 sex workers

Johannesburg - The call to decriminalise prostitution has intensified after the death of three sex workers and brutal assualt of one in February.

In a joint press statement, Sonke Gender Justice, Sex Worker Education & Advocacy Taskforce, Women’s Legal Centre and Sisonke National Sex Worker Movement said the release of the South African Law Reform Commission report on ‘Adult Prostitution’ (Project 107) has been delayed for more than 15 years and they want answers.

Cop killed in hail of bullets on N4, Diamond Toll Plaza

Johannesburg - A police officer has died in the line of duty after a shootout with five armed men on the N4 Highway at the Diamond Hill Toll Plaza, just outside Pretoria.

Constable Max Lekalakala, 32, and members of the Silverton Flying Squad spotted a suspicious looking vehicle during the early hours of Wednesday.

As he and his partner approached, the suspects opened fire, killing Constable Lekalakala.

Police returned fire, killing three suspects -- two of whom died at the scene and a third who died in hospital -- and wounding one.

Man critical after attempted hijacking in Olivedale

Johannesburg - A manhunt is on for armed hijackers who shot a man in Sharonlea, north of Johannesburg.

The incident is believed to have happened at approximately 2PM on Tuesday.

Fast responding Community Policing Forum members managed to call emergency medical services to assist the 35-year-old man who had been shot.

According to ER24, the man was lying at the floor when they arrived. He suffered a gun shot wound to his abdomen and was airlifted to hospital. 

The hijackers abandoned the vehicle and escaped the scene.

Newcastle collisions claim five lives

Durban - Five people were killed in two separate collisions on the N11 in Ngagane, Newcastle on Saturday morning. 

According to ER24, in the first accident, a light motor vehicle and a truck collided killing all the occupants of the car. The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash.

"A fourth person was found in the back of the vehicle in a critical condition. Due to the damage of the vehicle paramedics had to call upon the assistance of the local fire department to free the passenger from the wreckage."

Durban driver killed after tree falls on car

Durban - A man was killed in a freak accident in Westville, Durban on Saturday afternoon when a tree fell on top of his vehicle, while he was driving.

The man was apparently travelling on Essex Terrace when the large tree fell. 

Unconfirmed reports suggested that tree fellers who were in the area, had been cutting down trees on the side of the road when the accident occured. 

Meanwhile, ER24 said they arrived on the scene to find the man had died in the vehicle and that his body was trapped in the car.

PnP says it had "strong reasons" to have nursing mom arrested over unpaid items in pram

Cape Town - Outrage has followed the arrest of a nursing mother who allegedly had two unpaid coffees in the baggage area of her infant's pram.

The woman's sister, Amanda Olckers, took to Facebook yesterday with the details saying the items were discovered and her sister had returned to a checkout counter to pay for it. 

It was unclear if she had exited the store --  a Pick n Pay in Longbeach -- with the coffee or if she had noticed the unpaid items while still inside the premises.
