Treasury hits back: Duarte will prove she did not offer Fin Minister job to Jonas

Johannesburg - National Treasury has broken its silence over claims that Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas was offered the position of Finance Minister in December.

In a statement on Monday, Treasury accused the Sunday Times of giving credence to rumours, saying it used too many anonymous sources for its articles.

The newspaper quoted sources within the Treasury on claims ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte offered Mr. Jonas the position, a week after the Gupta family allegedly tried to persuade him to take the offer.

City officials lose appeal to evict shack dwellers

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town has lost its application for leave to appeal the suspension of an eviction order against residents of the Newcastle Informal Settlement in Khayelitsha.

The Western Cape High Court again ruled in favour of the community on Wednesday, and ordered the City to pay the costs of the hearing.

Residents have been living on land situated behind the Endlovini Informal Settlement since May 2014.

Red paint smeared over artwork at RMF exhibition

Cape Town - The Rhodes Must Fall Exhibition, “Echoing Voices from Within” was disrupted on Wednesday by members of the University of Cape Town's Trans Collective -- a student led organisation that prioritises the rights of transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex students at the University of Cape Town.

Students smeared photographs with red paint and blocked the entrances to the Centre for African Studies Gallery with their painted naked bodies. The exhibition was shut down.

Riots break out in Honeydew after illegal electricity supply cut

Johannesburg - Residents of an informal settlement in Honeydew have taken to the streets in protest, after officials cracked down on illegal electricity connections in the area on Tuesday.

It's believed a riot erupted near the Zandspriut informal settlement.between Johan Road and Peter Road and protestors burned tyres and threw rocks at authorities and motorists.

Unconfirmed reports suggested a police helicopter was on scene and that the road was closed, causing traffic to gridlock.

Health Dept to launch sex worker plan

Johannesburg - The Department of Health is expected to launch an HIV plan aimed at sex workers on Friday. Titled, The South African National Sex Worker HIV Plan, 2016 – 2019, it will be described by  Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaeldi. It will address sex worker rights and safety.

The Department said there are many programmes which assist sex workers in South Africa. Spokesperson Joe Maila said government programmes largely focus on health issues and mobile reach.

Cop arrested in undercover illegal drag racing sting

Cape Town - Traffic authorities have arrested a police officer who was allegedly caught participating in illegal street racing in Cape Town.

The city's Ghost Squad -- an arm of the traffic department which uses unmarked vehicles to patrol the streets and nab traffic violators and reduce road death -- made the arrest and charged the officer with reckless and negligent driving.

The incident happened along Koeberg Road in Milnerton last week Wednesday. Four motorists were arrested and charged with the officer, while 78 fines were issued for various offenses.

Car obliterated in accident leaves one dead, two injured

Mpumalanga - One person was killed and two others suffered injuries in a collision between a bakkie and a car on the N4 near Middelburg.

According to emergency services, the crash took place on Sunday afternoon.

The force of the crash split one of the vehicles in half.

ER24 paramedics said they arrived at the scene and found one of the injured patients in a critical condition. The other escaped with minor injuries.

It's believed the deceased person passed away before help could arrive.
