Beware of fuel station 'sliders' who snatch and run
Johannesburg - You might not be familiar with the term 'sliding', but it's a trick where criminals target cars at fuel stations by pulling alongside at the pump and snatching items through the passenger doors.
Video footage from ABC news shows several incidents of the crime and, more importantly, how easy it is to become a victim.
With the vehicles doors already unlocked to allow fuel to be filled into the tank, victims are soft targets. Many are unprepared for the attack, making it easy for the criminal to get away.
Essentially, a person drives up to a vacant pump, under the pretence of wanting to fill fuel. What they are actually doing is scoping you out to see if you're paying attention or if you're distracted, for example, by your phone. When you're least expecting it, they sneak up to a passenger door, grab what's available and escape.
