Shootout at Phoenix shopping mall after two attempted robbies
Durban - An armed gang of approximately 12 to 15 robbers struck a cash transit vehicle at the Whitehouse Shopping Centre in Phoenix, north of Durban, on Thursday.
According to a source, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, the armed gang severely damaged the vehicle. It was unclear if they had taken any money.
Other members then entered the mall, allegedly to rob another store. They opened fire on shoppers, wounding five, before escaping the scene.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said a man who had been critically wounded, got into his vehicle and chased after the thieves for nearly 2KM. The victim's wife and child were in the car at the time.
He said paramedics who were travelling along the R102, found him and administered urgent medical care before rushing him to hospital for emergency surgery.
Mr. Botha said at least 30 others were treated for shock. Some of the traumatised victims were taken to hospital.
Newsful spoke to one of the centre's tenants who called for security to be upgraded.
Lisa Mudhray, who works at Whitehouse Pharmacy, said she didn't hear about the incident until after it happened. She said it was a concern that her safety at work could be compromised in such a traumatic manner.
