Over 300 Leap Day babies born in Gauteng
Johannesburg - An incredible 148 girls and 153 boys were delivered at provincial hospitals around Gauteng on Leap Day -- the 29th of February.
In a statement from the Gauteng Department of Health, MEC Qedani Mahlangu said "about six [sets] of twins [were] born at Charlotte Maxeke Academic, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic, Dr George Mukhari Academic and Jubilee Hospitals."
“Giving birth is milestone every parent looks forward to and, to give birth on special day like Leap Day or Christmas Day or New Year’s Day is extra special. Mothers, look after your babies and follow the road to health guide to the latter of the letter,” said MEC Mahlangu.
According to Stats SA, about 1.1 million babies are born every year in the country. The latest annual figures are from 2014 and revealed that KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng recorded the most number of births.
Statistician-general Pali Lehohla noted that at least half the mothers giving birth had never been married and ranged between 15 and 29 years old.
Some famous people born on Leap Day, include South African-born actress, Suanne Braun.
