Cops crackdown on fake Govt syndicates
Johannesburg - Public Works Director General Mziwonke Dlabantu will be hosting an anti-fraud awareness campaign this week.
The Department said it wants to educate the public and businesses about a wave of scams that use official Public Works' documents to order expensive goods from unsuspecting suppliers.
Dlabantu says after the goods are collected, the criminals vanish without paying.
He says more than 20 companies have fallen prey to the scams, costing them more than R26 million worth of goods.
In one of the biggest scams, a computer company delivered R18 million of worth of laptops to a fictitious departmental address in Mpumalanga.
Dlabantu said a syndicate of sophisticated fraudsters is being investigated.
He said they were found to operate out of three provinces which included Gauteng and the North West.
